Abstract:
The need of translator education is still sparking controversy in Singapore despite the fact that translation studies has been internationally established as an academic discipline since 1970s. Meanwhile, the last decades have seen the education of translators shift to several new dimensions, thanks to rapidly-developing technology and globalization. Within this context, the first and only degree programme in Translation and Interpretation (T&I) in Singapore offered by SIM University is actively seeking ways to leverage on innovative solutions to supplement the conventional instruction and add value to the student learning experiences.
This paper presents an overview of devising integrated e-learning plans and activities to enhance the design and delivery of the course content in the BA in Translation and Interpretation (BATI) programme. The first section of this paper outlines why we believe e-learning has complementary roles to play in the translator education environment. We then describe the progressive approach in integrating online learning environment with on-site classroom environment in order to give students the best of both worlds. The study examines how e-learning platform is deployed to resolve problems in the training of translators and interpreters in the open-learning environment. Implication and issues encountered in the process of implementing e-learning plans are discussed. It is concluded that the blended approach in integrating online learning environment with conventional teaching is the most recommended solution that helps to strike a balance between high tech and high touch.
